Frequently asked questions about lactation consultants
A lactation consultant is the leading expert in the field of breastfeeding. Lactation consultants provide mothers and pregnant women with information and advice about breastfeeding and pumping. They also help to resolve any breastfeeding problems that may arise. Wendy is a member of the NVL (Dutch Association of Lactation Consultants) and is IBCLC certified.
A telephone consultation costs €40 and lasts approximately 30 minutes.
A pumping consultation with a lactation consultant at home (90 minutes) costs €130 plus 23 cents per kilometer. Home consultations are only possible if you live within a 40 km radius of Purmerend. Do you live 20 km or more than 20 km from Purmerend? Any parking costs will be charged separately.
Do you have supplementary insurance? Then almost all insurers will reimburse the lactation consultant consultation! Some insurers even reimburse (part of) the purchase of a breast pump. This usually requires a referral from a lactation consultant. You can obtain this after a consultation (by telephone).

Of course you can! You can test the Elvie breast pump during a home pumping consultation.
The lactation consultant brings several breast pump brands so you can try and compare them during the consultation. These include Elvie Pump, Elvie Stride 1 & 2, Medela Freestyle, Medela In-Bra, Medela Motion, Ardo Melia, and Youha.
Breastfeeding is natural — but that doesn’t mean it always feels easy. Every mother and every baby is different, and sometimes you simply need a little extra guidance, reassurance, or expert support along the way. That’s exactly where a lactation consultant comes in.
Whether you’re just getting started or already a few weeks or months in, you can reach out at any moment you feel something isn’t quite right or could feel better. No concern is too small.
A lactation consultant can gently guide and support you with:
– Discomfort or pain during feeding
– Finding a calm, comfortable latch that works for both you and your baby
– A baby who struggles to drink or refuses the breast
– Restlessness or sleepiness during feeds
– Breastfeeding a premature baby
– Questions or concerns about your baby’s growth
– Low milk supply or an oversupply
– Sensitive issues like (recurring) mastitis
– Pumping in a way that fits your routine
– Breastfeeding while navigating your own health challenges
– Feeding a baby with additional needs
– Slowly weaning in a way that feels right
– Restarting breastfeeding (relactation)
– Breastfeeding twins and finding your rhythm
At Akomo Kids, we believe breastfeeding should feel supported, not overwhelming. With the right guidance, you can find a flow that works for you and your baby — calm, confident, and completely your own.
